Most of us are always searching for ways to eat well, eat delicious, eat healthy and eat smart. In the "old" days this was called a diet. And those of us who needed help with dieting, turned to Weight Watchers. Kudos to the longevity of this weight management plan, which helped so many, achieve the goals of health and optimum weight.
In addition to celebrating 50 years of helping people lead healthier lives, the new book — Weight Watchers 50th Anniversary Cookbook (St. Martin's Griffin) — shares many of Weight Watchers best-loved and most popular recipes, along with new recipes. Classic recipes are refreshed and updated, to fit the lifestyle of busy home cooks and their families.
The book as does the program, reflects a half-century of change, It takes a look back at the foods that were once labeled "legal" and "illegal." Some of the old illegals– bananas, spaghetti and alcohol– are now embraced by the plan. Members are encouraged to make food and eating choices in line with ever evolving nutritional science, and yes, exercise is encouraged.
The 355-page hardcover book features more than 280 recipes for every meal and occasion, including updated old favorites, from Oven-Fried Fish and Chips to Baked Alaska. We enjoyed the classic retro recipes like the much beloved 1970's Weight Watcher's vegetable soup which did not count for any calories or points, and the delicious Crunchy Peanut Butter Fudge (1980s).
Weight Watchers 50th Anniversary Cookbook is a great resource for a quick-fix dinner or for planning a complete week of healthful menus. Each recipe includes nutritional information and its PointsPlus value per serving.
KosherEye notes: As in some of the cookbooks we present, there are several recipes which are not kosher friendly. However the helpful information and wonderful recipes far outweigh the recipes that do not adhere to the laws of kashruth. And, with appropriate substitutions, most of these recipes can be easily converted to kosher. The Weight Watcher's cookbook is an excellent addition to any culinary library.
