Traditional Jewish Meals Made Healthier
by Simone Miller and Jennifer Robins
Page Street Publishing
Authors Simone Miller and Jennifer Robins are in the forefront of the Paleo cooking community and have now melded traditional Jewish cooking and healthful contemporary and nourishing eating. The pair present over 100 traditional Jewish recipes for everyday and holidays in this labor of love their book, The New Yiddish Kitchen. They share classic traditional dishes such as matzo balls, borscht, challah, deli, sweet potato latkes, apple kugel, black & white cookies and more. . . and adapt them for a gluten-free, grain free, paleo kosher lifestyle. Are you kvelling yet?
The book combines new and old ingredients based on the Paleo philosophy, whole foods and kosher. The fun comes in when “Bubbe”, the authors’ grandmothers, comment on many of the recipes, offering tips and advice (sometimes even a kvetch). We also like the full-page photographs and the Yiddish glossary. The authors share their love and knowledge of healthy food and their devotion to Jewish Culinary tradition. Jennifer Robins is the founder of the food blog Predominantly Paleo and wrote the cookbook Down South Paleo; Simone Miller owns Zenbelly catering and shares recipes and cooking tips on her blog Zenbelly.com.
From Simone and Jennifer: We’d love to see this book passed down through the years (from bubbies to babies) put on display in your family’s kitchen and splattered with schmaltz (a true symbol of honor.) Our recipes are literally “for Life”.
