Food Swap by Emily Paster
Specialty Recipes for Bartering, Sharing & Giving
Storey Publishing

Part cookbook, part how-to guide, Food Swap features more than 80 recipes to create DIY artisanal items. Not only does the author share recipes, but she shares beautiful ways to package these creations. There are recipes for food gifts such as preserves, baked goods such as focaccia and quick breads, granolas, cheeses, pestos, roasted nuts, flavored salts, and specialty spices, everything from salted caramel sauce and Meyer lemon curd, to green tomato salsa, lavender shortbread, cultured butter, apricot jalapeno jelly, and rum vanilla extract. Most all the recipes can easily be made kosher.

Emily Paster is co-founder of the Chicago Food Swap, one of the biggest and most successful in the world. She is a trained lawyer, but launched a second career in food writing and social media in 2010 when she started her popular website West of the Loop, which has been named “a family food blog to savor.”

In the kosher world, due to the laws of kashruth, a general food swap is a bit complicated. However, gifting foods to family and friends for Shabbos and Yom Tov is very popular, especially at Purim. The first half of Food Swap, shares information on how to launch a swap event; To the best of our knowledge swaps are not yet prevalent in the kosher community, which makes it a novel idea for someone to start. The second half of the book is a guide to the “best of the best” recipes for simple gifting and swapping. These recipes have been selected due to their popularity; and include fresh items, preserved items and canned treats. We also liked the suggested packaging and gift tag designs, which are both creative and simple.
Whether or not you participate in a Food Swap, you will find this book a valuable addition to your culinary library to help prepare simple, delicious foods for friends and family.
