"A Wickedly Delicious Pickle"


Mention "pickles" and everyone has an opinion on their favorite type. There are dill, kosher dill, sour, half sour, sweet, bread and butter... and then there are Wickles Pickles! The pickle has a long and interesting history. Did you know that the Ancient Mesopotamians were thought to have made the first pickle in 2400 B.C.?  And Cleopatra claimed pickles made her beautiful! We have to thank Christopher Columbus for bringing the pickle to the New World. He grew cucumbers on the Island of Haiti for the purpose of pickling and gave them to his sailors to keep them from getting scurvy.

There is nothing quite like a Wickles Pickle–a combination of sweet, hot, and garlic. We love it! Made by Sims Foods, Dadeville, Alabama, the company was started in December 1998 by brothers Trey and Will Sims. The brothers originally made the pickles, using a 70-year-old Sims family recipe, as holiday gifts for family and friends. As with everything that tastes great, word spread about the pickles and people started calling and asking where they could purchase them. "We never imagined those wicked little pickles would take on a life of their own." And these "wicked little pickles" are OU kosher certified!

KosherEye spoke with Trey Sims and he shared stories about the early production days of the company.  "We rented a commercial kitchen and made 27 cases a day. We would make pickles for a few days and then sell them for a few days. When the sales income covered our expenses, we decided to have the pickles produced elsewhere and to concentrate solely on sales".  When asked what motivated them to have their product kosher certified, Trey replied, "The pickles are kosher by nature, so it was only natural to have them kosher certified."

The Wickles brand started with the pickle and each year they have introduced a new product: Relish, Sub & Hoagie Relish, two Banana Pepper items and, last fall, Wicked Okra. All of the products have the Wickles trademark taste–pepper based! The Hoagie & Sub Relish is a knockout appetizer when served over a block of cream cheese. Try tuna salad, chicken salad and potato salad the Wickles Relish way.

Wickles Pickles were voted “Best Hot Pickle” by Rachel Ray Magazine and Southern Living Magazine described the taste of Wickles products as "irresistible."  We agree–they are irresistible!

Another interesting pickle fact: The Department of Agriculture estimates that the average American eats 8.5 pounds of pickles a year. We highly recommend Wickles Pickles be part of your 8.5 pounds!
